When one thinks of a shed, most of us automatically think of a wooden garden shed, situated somewhere deep in the garden packed with tools, childhood toys, pots and other garden implements.

Most have that familiar creosote, gardening smell that as children, teenagers and all the way up to adults we have all become accustomed.

Wooden garden sheds have become the natural choice for most people for all of the above reasons and will probably continue to do so.

  • They blend well into the surrounding garden environment.
  • They are easily altered to add windows, shelves, window boxes and so on. They can be painted from one year to another in a wealth of different paints, varnishes and preservatives to suit the mood of the day.
  • They are the environmentally friendly choice of materials, many nowadays are FSC accredited which means that the timber used can be traced back to a certified sustainable source.

All good reasons to consider a wooden garden shed, but as garden specialists we think it equally important to balance the good with the bad.

Despite the strength of wood, over time it can rot, split, warp or become susceptible to mould and mildew, so wooden garden sheds should be treated regularly for protection unless otherwise instructed.

Stains and preservatives can be applied to wooden garden sheds to prevent damage to the wood caused by exposure to rain, damp ground, direct sunlight, harsh climatic conditions, fungal attack and wood-boring insects. If a coloured preservative oil or stain is used, a wooden shed can either be made to stand out as a feature within a garden, or to blend in with its surroundings.

Some types of wood, such as cedar are more naturally-resistant to water damage.

Wooden garden sheds also require other regular maintenance, such as keeping plant matter and debris from piling up beside the walls and on the roof. Occasionally roof felt may need replacing particularly after heavy winds or a season of particularly harsh weather.

Fire, of course can also prove a potential problem so be sure not light a fire close to it and you should not store petrol or other hazardous/flammable chemicals in a wooden garden shed.

All in all, at Gardens4Living we believe that you cannot go far wrong with a wooden garden shed particularly if is FSC certified. They are the shed of choice and will probably continue to be far into the future.
