The
humble garden shed; typically a simple, single story structure which lives in
the back garden or on an allotment and used for many different activities
including storage, hobbies, a workshop and of course a solitary retreat for men
from "her indoors"!
Sheds
vary considerably in the complexity of their construction and their size, from
small open-sided tin-roofed structures to large wood-framed sheds with shingled
roofs, windows, and electrical outlets.
The
vast majority of sheds are garden sheds, including allotment sheds. This class
of sheds also includes potting sheds and tool sheds.
Most
modern gardens are too small for more than a single shed, containing garden
tools and lawn mowers.
Gardens4Living
offer a range of garden sheds constructed from a range of materials including
wooden sheds, metal sheds, plastic sheds as well as other popular garden
buildings such as garden offices, gazebos, summerhouses and pavilions.
Wooden Sheds
Of
the range of garden sheds, wooden sheds have traditionally been the most
popular.
It
is an environmentally friendly material and many sheds nowadays are FSC
certified.
It
is warm, economical, comes in hundreds of different shapes and sizes and of
course can be painted in any colour the owner chooses.
The
downside to a wooden shed is that it they do require continual treating unless
a more expensive wood such as Cedar is chosen, cheaper sheds can be flimsy and
on the whole they can be difficult to relocate, particularly the larger ones.
Metal Sheds
Over the past decade, metal sheds have become
increasingly more popular due to the broad range that suppliers are bringing to
market with new functionality such as roof lighting, high security lockable
doors and a good choice of colours.
Metal sheds are quick to assemble and easy to
maintain.
That
said, metal is a cold material and not so good for keeping pets such as guinea
pigs or rabbits.
Condensation can collect on tools.
Metal sheds can be noisy e.g. shutting the doors and they can incur rust problems if
water doesn´t drain away.
Plastic Sheds
Relatively
new to market are a range of plastic sheds.
Lightweight,
easy to assemble and can be taken apart easily for relocation.
They
often have wide front opening doors and require little maintenance.
On the flipside, plastic sheds are considered to be non-environmentally
friendly and can look out of place in older properties.
